If ile başlayan kısım (koşul) ile sonuç kısmının yeri değişebilir. If-clause önde gelirse araya virgül konur; sonda gelirse virgül gerekmez: “We will stay at home if it rains.”
Ayrıntılar ve sık yapılan hatalar
- If-clause’da will ve would kullanılmaz: “If it will rain” değil “If it rains”; “If I would have known” değil “If I had known”.
- İkinci tipte resmî dilde ve sınavlarda tüm öznelerle “were” kullanılır: If I were you, I would apologise. (günlük dilde “was” da duyulur)
- Sonuç kısmında would yerine could ya da might gelebilir: If we left now, we might catch the train.
- Geçmişteki bir koşulun şimdiki sonucu için karışık yapı kullanılır: If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. (Mixed Conditionals sayfasına bakın)
if yerine kullanılan bağlaçlar
- unless = if not: Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus. (Acele etmezsen otobüsü kaçırırsın.)
- provided / providing (that), as long as, on condition that = şartıyla: You can borrow my car as long as you drive carefully.
- in case = ihtimaline karşı (koşul değil, önlem): Take an umbrella in case it rains.
- otherwise = aksi takdirde: Hurry up, otherwise we’ll be late.
- suppose / supposing, what if = diyelim ki: Suppose you won the lottery, what would you do?

Doğru cevap: were. 2nd conditional if-clause uses simple past (were for all persons in formal/exam usage).

3.Which sentence is correct?
Doğru cevap: If I study, I will pass.. 1st conditional: if + simple present → will + V1.
4.Unless you ___ harder, you won’t pass the exam.
Doğru cevap: study. unless zaten “if not” anlamındadır; ayrıca olumsuz yapılmaz ve gelecek için Present kullanılır: unless you study.
5.___ I known about the traffic, I would have left earlier.
Doğru cevap: Had. Devrik 3. tip: Had I known = If I had known.
6.If he ___ more careful, he wouldn’t have had the accident.
Doğru cevap: had been. Sonuç kısmı “wouldn’t have had” → 3. tip; koşul kısmı Past Perfect: had been.
7.Take a jacket ___ it gets cold in the evening.
Doğru cevap: in case. Olası bir duruma karşı önlem → in case.
If Clause (Conditionals) hakkında sorular
Resmî İngilizcede ve sınavlarda ikinci tip koşul cümlesinde tüm öznelerle “were” kullanılır: If I were you… Günlük konuşmada “If I was” da yaygındır, ancak YDS, YDT ve IELTS Writing’de “were” tercih edin.
Çoğunlukla evet: “Unless you leave now, you’ll be late.” = “If you don’t leave now…” unless’ten sonra fiil olumsuz yapılmaz; “Unless you don’t study” yanlıştır.
If-clause cümlenin başındaysa virgül konur: “If it rains, we’ll stay in.” Sonda ise virgül gerekmez: “We’ll stay in if it rains.”
if bir koşuldur: yağmur yağarsa şemsiye alırım. in case bir önlemdir: yağmur yağma ihtimaline karşı şemsiyeyi şimdiden alırım. “Take an umbrella in case it rains.”
